About Me, Jon "The Hammer" Hobus

I've always been interested in fantasy worlds like Lord of The Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, and many others. The idea of entering those worlds though crafting in my own smithy was so enticing! When my mother acquired a welder for Christmas, she offered for us to build a rebar bottle tree. Taking on this project with her was the first step through the doorway of metallurgy.

When my high school best friend offered for me to come over and try blacksmithing in his new propane forge, I was so excited to get started! We spent countless Friday nights hammering, tinkering, and just messing around, creating little things like bottle openers, leaf pendants, and even a few of the worst blades you've ever seen... This was what solidified my decision to work with metal as a career.

I then went to college at North Georgia Tech for welding, got my certification, and came back home where I was offered a teaching position at a local high school. I moved on after one semester, finding that it just wasn't for me. One of my Dad's friends offered me a job fabricating handrails, mailboxes, and doing miscellaneus repairs, so I stuck around there for two years. I found myself longing for the feeling of a hammer striking hot metal after working in a Caterpillar factory, so I got back into forging in my backyard shop.

I've shown my work at a few festivals and markets since my beginning, and have had a blast with the entire process. I'm looking forward to getting more into the sculpture aspect of it, and proving to myself that I have the creative abilities to make anything in my own artistic style. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Hammer of Hobus!

Experience

2016-2018

North Georgia Technical College

During my time here I earned certifications for MIG, TIG, and Stick welding in all postitions of pipe, groove, and fillet styles. I also learned to use a wet band saw, oxy-acetylene torch, arc gouger, and automatic pipe beveler.

2015-present

Self-taught Blacksmithing

Starting in junior year of high school, my best friend and I would go to his back yard and bash some hot steel every Friday night until early Saturday morning, learning with each other the techniques of tapering, beveling, twisting, bending, curling, chiseling, etc.
